Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have historically focused on the education of African Americans. Although the universities have historically served blacks, all ethnicities can enroll. Many HBCUs serve several minority groups including Hispanic communities. Six HBCUs have chemical engineering programs. Around 25 - 30% of American undergraduate degrees awarded in chemical engineering are conferred at the six HBCUs. This report analyzes the relevance of HBCUs on minorities â?? in particular African Americans â?? earning degrees and entering the chemical engineering profession.
