In response to requirements to consolidate student educational labs for Chemical Engineering and Earth and Environmental Engineering, the Columbia University Department of Chemical Engineering recently significantly renovated and upgraded the Chemical Engineering Unit Operations Lab through a School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, SEAS, supported project.  Space saving adjustments, interoperability, flexibility, connectivity, and maintaining educational goals as well as considerations for future lab adjustments were addressed during this project.  The considerations for this type of renovation are similar for many programs, but may come as a non-standard change.  Lessons learned from the project as well as a suggested approach to such a change for the chemical engineering unit operations lab of the future will be shared.
