Vortex chambers allow high-G operation and intensifying interfacial transfer of mass, heat and momentum. In the presented experimental work, multi-zone vortex chambers are studied in which gas at different temperature can be fed to each zone. A first part of the presentation deals with the flow pattern in the absence of a particle phase and mixing between different zones. In a second part, the interaction with a drying particle phase is studied, as well in terms of mass, heat and momentum transfer. Different design aspects and the impact of some important operating conditions are discussed. The potential process intensification that can be achieved by operating high-G is evaluated.
