(243j) Mixtures of Ultra-Low Viscosity Base Fluids for Fuel Efficiency

Tribology consists of the study of friction, wear and lubrication which is relevant when surfaces come into contact in relative motion. With oil, lubrication is implemented and the amount of wear and friction is greatly reduced. The goal of this project was to investigate low-viscosity base stock mixtures in order to improve fuel efficiency. A synthetic base oil, an ester, and an advanced mineral oil were selected to be tested with 5 different concentrations of each. By understanding the way these mixtures affect friction, wear, and overall lubrication of the metal to metal contact, we can better understand what would work best to increase fuel efficiency in an engine. A High Frequency Reciprocating Rig (HFRR) and a 4-Ball Machine were used to conduct the experiments since they imitate a Piston and Cylinder in a motor engine. A Light Optical Microscope and a Profilometer were used to analyze the wear scars and tribological films formed on the metal surfaces.
