With the depletion of the oil reserves, the oil is getting heavy day by day. The utilization of the heavy oil in the refinery process leads to the generation of high amount of short residue from the vacuum distillation units. The present study is about finding the different pathways for the utilization of the short residue to the formation of useful products. The conversion of short residue to useful product also helps in increasing the economic viability of the refinery processes. This research work initially studies about the quality of the various crudes available in the Indian petroleum industry. The different processes involved for the upgradation are categorized as Carbon Rejection Process and Hydrogen Addition Process. The present work further discussed on the selection of the specific process depending on the quality of the short residue left in the refinery.
