Turbulent mixing is at the heart of numerous industrial processes. Over the past sixty-plus years significant advances in experimental and computational science have led to a fundamental understanding of how turbulent flows enhance mixing across a wide range of length and time scales. Despite the apparent complexity, this knowledge has led to predictive turbulent mixing models that can be incorporated in CFD simulations. In this talk, I will discuss how direct numerical simulations of turbulent mixing have been used to improve CFD models for turbulent reacting flows. I will also discuss open problems such as mixing models for differential diffusion, active scalars and multiphase flows.
