This session will cover fundamental and applied aspects of adsorption and ion exchange relevant to nuclear energy and waste treatment systems. Adsorption/ion exchange processes are needed in a number of such systems including: uranium/thorium extraction from mined resources; uranium extraction from seawater; commercial nuclear reactors; radioactive liquid waste treatment facilities; and nuclear fuel reprocessing facilities. Of particular interest for gas adsorption is capture of volatile fission products from nuclear fuel reprocessing systems. Ion exchange systems for aqueous and non-aqueous fluids are of interest for concentrating radioactive elements or achieving difficult separations needed for closing the nuclear fuel cycle.
