(91e) Biolubricant: Lignin in Choline/Amino Acid Ionic Liquids
Lignocellulosic biomass is the most abundantly available raw resource on the earth for the production of valuable products. Utilization of cellulose in versatile promising applications has been intensely investigated in last a few decades. However, the utilization of lignin is greatly restricted due to the its resistant to degradation, being held together with strong chemical bonds and also appears to have a lot of internal hydrogen bonds. Lignin fractionation from biomass has been demonstrated in choline based ionic liquids(ILs), however, the high cost of the ILs necessitates its recycle in industrial process which is difficult due to the large energy consumption. In this work, we present a new application for lignin dissolved in Choline based amino acid ILs as a green bio-lubricant. The addition of lignin could improve choline based ILs’ anti-wear properties and friction stability. Various characterization techniques including differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and rheology are used to study the effect of lignin on the thermal, physical and tribological properties of lignin/choline based ILs. The results show that the lignin could enhance the physiochemical properties simultaneously.
