Development of recombinant platform for the production of bioactive peptides is particularly important since current solid phase synthesis is difficult and sometimes uneconomical for products greater than 40 amino acids in length. These limitations impair the depolyment of longer peptides for therapeutic applications and provide an important challenge to tackle, namely efficient production.  Our group has been investigating the use of recombinant technology and fed-batch fermentation to produce a novel antifungal peptide that shows broad spectrum activity.  This presentation will summarize our efforts, and include a description of the strategies used to construct an effective recombinant strain, an examination of the conditions necessary for efficient fermentation and bioseparation, and an assessment of efficacy when compared to its solid phase homolog.
