Elastomeric materials are an important component of many high-pressure, high-temperature processes in the chemical industry. For example, elastomer seals in the oil and gas industry are required to withstand compressive stresses in the range of 100 to 140 MPa and temperatures in the range of 0 to 180 °C, without undergoing microstructural damage and loss of elasticity (that is, permanent set). This talk will present the results of cyclic loading experiments to characterize polymer‒filler and filler‒filler interactions in crosslinked butadiene copolymers filled with carbon black and other fillers. The determination of the parameters of linear and nonlinear viscoelastic models using uniaxial tension and compression experiments on these composites will also be discussed.
