The clathrate hydrate process has been demonstrated over the recent years as promising for innovative applications like natural gas storage, carbon capture, seawater desalination, cold storage etc. Some challenges remain specific to each of these focus areas that needs to be overcome to commercialize these applications. In this presentation, the state of the art on gas hydrate technology pertaining to carbon capture will be discussed in detail. The focus will be on pre-combustion carbon capture from IGCC power plants. Compared with competing technologies, high CO2 capacity and the use of water as a solvent are key advantages for the HBGS process for CO2 capture. Our progress on this technology in the past ten years will be presented. Furthermore, a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art will be presented and further research and development opportunities and pathways for commercializing the HBGS process for pre-combustion capture of CO2 from IGCC power plants will be discussed.
