Process simulators are tools widely used for the design of chemical processes and chemical products. These products are ubiquitous in process engineering work and a normal part of the engineer’s work flow. These tools and associated tools like the software plug-ins designed to provide highly specialized services such as mass transfer separation modules, flare systems and advanced chemical reactors. Although the tools are widely used little is said about the process used to develop these tools, the challenges the software product developer faces and how these challenges are met. In this presentation we take an introspective look at the development of software products commonly used in process design and process simulation.
