(115f) Experiences in Inorganic Fouling Removal from Condensate Polishing Resin Using Weak-Acid Based Cleaner in Badak LNG

Badak LNG is a steam driven LNG plant, which uses 21 boilers to produce high pressure steam (62 kg/cm2, 450oC) with total steam generating capacity of 61 MT/year. Approximately 95% of the steam produced is recovered as condensate and returned back to the system as boiler feed water. Total of 15 condensate polishers, filled with macroporous strong acid cation resin, are employed at the condensate return system to remove corrosion product, mainly iron and copper, from condensate stream.

In 2012, it was found that the condensate polishing resin was fouled with inorganic compound. Accumulation of inorganic fouling can increase the amount of iron slippage and decreasing condensate water quality. As a follow up, it was decided to conduct offline resin cleaning using weak-acid based cleaner in 2013 and 2014. Citric acid based cleaner was selected due to its easy handling & its relatively low safety/health hazard compared with strong acid such as HCl. This resin cleaner is intended to solubilize and disperse the inorganic foulants from resin beads.

To date, six polishers unit (36V-7A/E/F & 36C-7A/C/F) have been cleaned with varying result, from 35% up to 87% foulant removal. Several key factors were identified that may determine the success of the cleaning program, e.g.: the cleaner dosage, repetition/frequency of cleaning, and proper mixing of cleaner. Compared with total resin replacement, this cleaning program can potentially save up to USD 49,000 per vessel.
