Polymer electrolyte membranes have applications in energy storage and transformation devices, such as fuel cells, flow batteries, water electrolysis, or in water treatment processes such as desalination. The presence of ion-conducting nanochannels, which enable passage of hydrated ions, are important for efficient ion transport in these membranes. Some approaches to induce nanochannel formation using polymer architecture will be discussed.
