(606b) Fast Pyrolysis of S.japonica in a Bubbling Fluidized Bed Reactor for Bio-Oil Production

Recently, macro-algae are recognized as one of the potential feedstock for renewable energy and fuel production. Saccharina Japonica is a kind of macro-algae, which is extensively cultivated in Korea for the production of value added chemicals and fuel. S. Japonica can be converted into bio-oil, gas and char through fast pyrolysis. In this study, fast pyrolysis of S.Japonica was performed in bubbling fluidized-bed reactor under various reaction conditions (pyrolysis temperature, flow rate of fluidizing medium, biomass particle size) to investigate the effect of these variables on the product yields and the qualities of bio-oil. The results showed that the highest yield of bio-oil was 40.87%, obtained at pyrolysis temperature of 350 oC with gas flow rate of 9.6 L/min, feeding rate of 100 g/hr. The biomass particle size also affected the bio-oil yield. The bio-oil contained highest selectivity for propanone and di-anhydromannitol were 43.93% and 22.19%, respectively. The 13C NMR showed the shorter aliphatic carbons and lower molecular weight compounds of alcohol, carbohydrate and ketone were generated during pyrolysis at higher temperature, due to secondary decomposition reactions. The collected biogas after reaction was analyzed by Gas Chromatography with FID detectors. The compositions of bio-char were determined by elemental analysis and inductively couple plasma.
