(570i) The Integration of Data and Models for the Optimization of Integrated Biorefineries

The great advancements in the field of biorefineries have resulted to a vast amount of models of different scale. The models include conceptual, detailed, experimental, pilot, cost analysis, short-cuts, supply chain, LCA creating a huge database that remains unstructured and disjoint. Additionally, the various models are based on heterogenous data sources and softwares. The paper addresses the challenge of collocating all the models and available knowledge in a common platform with perspective of model integration. The approach proposes a Java based platform which manages decision-making, extracts and distributes data selectively to systematize the development and execution of optimization models for integrated biorefineries. Automation of the models development using natural language is important to render the platform accessible also by non-experts of the field hiding the complex mathematical formulas on the background. The combination and comparing of inputs-outputs of different models (GAMS, MATLABL, Aspen) to serve different purposes is coordinated through the platform providing a more accurate and complete viewing of the integrated biorefineries. Ontologies are employed to succeed the selective extraction of data sets which fill the models context. Furthermore, the dynamic framework established translates the user input through successive queries and allocation algorithms directly to models ready to provide the targetted outcome without further modifications. The features of dynamic configuration of data (ontologies) and the visualization of the results conclude the objectives of the approach. Implementations keep extending and currently include the automated development of models (GAMS, MATLAB) that optimize chemical superstructures and the environmental assessment of waste for integrated biorefineries.
