(292d) The Design, Performance and Cost Interrelationship in Batteries

Batteries are invaluable aspects of our daily lives whether they start our cars or power our portable electronics. Future potential paradigm shifts in personal transportation and/or the electrical grid may further demonstrate the value of batteries as electrochemical energy storage devices. While many different battery chemistries exist and one may be better suited for a specific application over another, certain design and performance principles are common throughout. Furthermore, these designs directly affect the manufacturing cost and thus price to the original equipment manufacturer and consumers. This presentation will present the governing equations for battery design and how they relate to performance and cost. Examples will be presented for lithium-ion, beyond lithium-ion, and flow battery based technologies.
