Lewis acidic tetravalent heteroatoms (Sn4+, Ti4+, Zr4+) isolated within silica-based molecular sieves catalyze sugar isomerization and epimerization reactions as well as Diels Alder reactions of ethylene with substituted furans. Here, I will discuss the atomic arrangements and local environments of the Lewis acid centers and their reaction properties.
