(354b) Hypervelocity Impact Under Cryogenic Conditions of Honeycomb Sandwich Panels

One challenge in space applications is protection of structures from damage arising from impact with micrometeoroids and orbital debris (MMOD).  One potential solution for improving the shielding capabilities is the use of shear thickening fluids within honeycomb sandwich panels.  To examine shielding effectiveness, hypervelocity impact tests were performed using a micro two-stage light gas gun, capable of velocities ranging from 3 km/s to 5 km/s, under a helium environment.  Honeycomb sandwich panels were infused with a known amount of shear thickening fluid, consisting of PEG-200 along with hydrophilic and hydrophobic fused silica of differing surface area.  Tests were carried out at ambient temperature and at cryogenic temperature.  Damage profiles, examined using CT scanning, will be discussed.
