Reflections on a Stellar Teacher and Researcher: Dr. Howard Littman, Professor Emeritus

I am sure that many of Professor Littman's former students (disciples) can speak of being indoctrinated into the Littman research philosophy of "A & E"; no not "Arts and Entertainment" but rigorous "analysis" and arduous "experimentation". Professor Littman was a tough taskmaster who demanded much of his graduate students but who was always kind, considerate and supportive in the management of us. For me personally, I contribute much of my professional success and growth to his research philsophy, sage advice, guidance and a heavy dose of Jewish history
that Howard bestowed on many occasions.

In the time allotted for my presentation I will highlight a few of Howard's seminal papers on the stability of spouted bed systems that speaks to his research approach ("A & E"), his focus on developing a clear fundamental understanding of the underlying physics at play in such systems and the significance of his research to fluid-particle systems in general.
