(160f) Aqueous Aerosol Chemistry: SOA Formation and Impacts On Aerosol Physical Properties

Authors

McNeill, V. F. - Presenter, Columbia University

Organic chemistry in aerosol and cloud water has been recognized as a source of secondary organic aerosol material (SOA) from volatile, water-soluble precursors. I will give an overview of the state of the science re: known mechanisms for aqueous SOA formation from a laboratory perspective.  I will discuss the application of a numerical model of coupled gas and aqueous aerosol chemistry, GAMMA (McNeill et al. Environ. Sci. Technol. 2012) that was developed my group, to study the formation of secondary organic aerosol material in aerosol water and the associated changes in aerosol physical properties.
