The Present and Future Role of Chemical Engineering in Tissue Engineering

Chair(s)

Wagner, W. R., University of Pittsburgh

Co-chair(s)

Gilbert, T., University of Pittsburgh

Chemical engineers have been instrumental in defining and driving forward the field of tissue engineering. Polymer design and processing, transport phenomena, the employment of controlled release, and system design using kinetic parameter knowledge are some examples of chemical engineering fundamentals that have been applied by numerous innovators in the tissue engineering field. This session will highlight how far the field has come, and the unmet needs and challenges that lay ahead with presentations by leaders from academe and industry. The ultimate goal of this session is to fully engage chemical engineers in the development of emerging technologies and strategies to advance patient care.
