(58a) How to Meet New ABET Requirements in Process Safety

The new process safety requirements were approved by ABET in October, 2011 and are in effect for all chemical engineering departments under ABET review beginning in the Fall of 2012.  This paper will first discuss what the new requirements mean for chemical engineering departments.  The author will then discuss the various ways that univerisities have used to meet these requirements.  This will include a dedicated course, material spread throughout the curriulum or a hybrid approach.  The advantages and disadvantages of each approach will be discussed.  This paper will also discuss how the unit operations laboratory is very important for introducing aspects of safety culture into the curriculum.  The paper will include information on how this is done at Michigan Tech University using a student run safety program.  This includes a hazard reporting system, pre and post lab inspections and required safety meetings.  This type of safety program closely matches industrial practice and prepares the student to encounter a similar program on their very first job experience.
