(567e) Critical Sustainability Challenges in the Short Term

Although there is much interest in concepts of sustainability within the chemical and energy industries, especially related to health, safety, and environmental performance, product stewardship, and efficient use of resources, the greatest sustainability challenge may well be that associated with fossil energy use which directly contributes to the majority of carbon dioxide emissions and its potential for significant climate change.  It is now understood that reserves of fossil fuels are more abundant than previously believed, and it is very likely that they will continue to be exploited.  In light of this situation, this presentation will discuss the challenges in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel use, in substituting non-fossil energy, in substituting more energy intense fossil for another, in the design of more energy efficient chemical and power production systems, and new approaches to the optimum control of energy use during process operations.
