(280d) Sustainability in Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics and Separations

Arguably the best way for chemical engineers to be introduced to sustainability is for these ideas to be incorporated throughout the curriculum.  Here we will give examples of how this can be done in conventional chemical engineering thermodynamics and separation courses.

Examples include quantification and reduction of breathing losses from tanks, consideration of liquid-liquid extraction as an alternative to energy intensive distillation for mixtures with relative volatilities close to one, and ways of reducing emissions from power plants by improvements in cycle efficiencies, among many others.
