Interfaces between heterogeneous materials are of researchers’ interest because merits of different materials can be possibly combined with the thorough knowledge of them. The complexity of this research usually exists due to their inherent lack of affinity to each other, although it can be overcame by surface modifications. The interface between polymer and metal is one of them. A variety of different types of interactions could exist at the interface between polymer and metal, depending on the modification strategies. To name a few, hydrophobic and hydrophilic interactions, electrostatic forces, hydrogen bonds are all possible interactions. With better understanding of the mechanism behind these interactions, some toxic and corrosive pretreatment before coating can be improved or even eliminated. In our study, we will investigate and make use of these interactions to assemble metal films on to nanostructured polymer particles and 3D foams. The metal coating on to nanostructured polymer particles with different sizes, different types of polymer particles with different shapes and also 3D cellular foam materials will be presented.
