(142m) Modeling Precipitation Reactions in Turbulent Flow with Qmom Incorporated Into LES



For precipitation in a liquid turbulent pipe flow, a population balance in large-eddy simulation will be presented.  The moments of the population balance will be used to track the size distribution of the particles as it evolves in the flow field.  The flow field will be simulated in a computational fluid dynamics program using large-eddy simulation.  A quadrature method of moments solver has been incorporated into the LES code to solve the population balance of several competing precipitates.  The chemistry for the problem has a timescale separation, such that aqueous species react quickly enough to reach equilibrium, while the precipitates form on the same timescale as the flow.  In order to avoid the computational expense of the non-linear equilibrium solve, the chemistry has been pre-tabulated as a function of the mixture fraction and the extent of reaction to be used as a look-up table.  To provide coupling between the overlapping mixing and precipitation time scales a model for the scalar variance of the mixture fraction has been incorporated using a simplified subgrid scale mixing model based on the multi-environment approach.
