The transition to a faculty position can be a difficult process. This workshop is intended to help prepare prospective faculty prepare for the search process and successfully transition into an academic position. It will offer advice on identifying suitable career goals and specific objectives, and developing a plan to achieve them. Special attention will be devoted to establishing a funded research program. Elements of the career plan will include: • Navigating the Job Search Process (research and teaching plans, interviewing, start-up packages) • Establishing a Research Program (obtaining funding, Career Award preparation, problem identification & selection, contacting funding sources, network development) • Understanding the University Environment (tenure & promotion, service activities, sabbaticals, reward structure, mentoring expectations) • Managing Your Time (goal setting & priorities, stress reduction, good habits) The workshop will take place during a 3-hour period on Sunday, prior to the Meet the Faculty Candidate Poster. Through group activities, sharing of experiences, and advice from experienced faculty the basis for developing an academic career plan will be established.
