(420d) Jacket Controlled RC1 Heat Transfer Scale Down

Mathematical models of dose controlled reactions based on RC1 heat flow (Qr) data are quite common and well developed however mathematical predictions for non-dose controlled reactions from Qr data are quite a different matter. Even dose controlled predictions can be tricky if one is attempting to optimize the large scale reaction in such a fashion that reaction temperature (Tr) increases. Reaction rate, viscosity, and mechanistic behavior are influenced by the batch temperature change but these are seldom accounted for in mathematical models. Presented here is a method for mimicking the heat transfer of a large vessel by manipulating Tj in the RC1 so as to directly observe and measure any changes in Tr and their resulting effect on the reaction. The approach described is based solely on widely accepted scale-up first principles and is derived mathematically as well as empirically tested.
