Vattenfall AB, one of the largest utilities in the European Union (EU), has embarked on the first large-scale demonstration of oxy-coal combustion in the world at the Schwarze Pumpe plant in Germany. The pilot plant, in operation since the Fall of 2008, includes its own Air Separation Unit, a single, commercial-scale oxy-coal burner housed within a water-wall boiler, and a system for carbon dioxide purification and compression into liquid form prior to transport to a sequestration site. This presentation will discuss the latest developments at our pilot plant, as well as the development of our oxy-fuel commercial demonstration unite, and the associated engineering considerations.
