A process to isolate and purify an industrial aqueous sodium nitrite bearing by-product stream was developed and built. This process stream was formally incinerated at significant cost. The basis for the purification is carbon treatment, and the purified product is of sufficient quality to have found utility in the market place. Aspects of the technology to be discussed are raw material and product specifications, carbon type, carbon utilization, pertinent analytical methods, process safety, and the overall benefits to the environment.
