(490ae) The Barriers to the Implementation of Green Chemistry in China

The steadily growing global population has caused increasing pressure on realizing sustainable development with limit Earth resources. The great potential of renewable resources in alleviating the pressure has stimulated increased efforts all over the world in bio-fuels production from biomass. In past 10 years, China has also given great efforts to push the development in fuel ethanol. In China, only non food materials are permitted to be used as feedstock to produce bio-fuels in recent years, while the security of food is concerned. As a result, the bloomed up Chinese researches in this area are concentrated to cellulosic feedstock. But in Chinese researches, there appear to be more challenges arising from the engineering barriers in commercializing the process from Corn Stover to Fuel Ethanol at large scale. The raw material as corn stover goes through 2 basic steps with processes of hydrolysis and fermentation respectively to produce any bio-fuels. Keeping on achieving cost effective efficiency of this process is pursued widely. This work has successfully generated a Discrete, Coupling and Parallel mechanism which has been successfully used to upgrade the efficiency of popular Simultaneous Saccharification Fermentation method to a new level. It has been adopted by a successfully established industrial demonstration of 3000 tons corn stover ethanol process. It shows that the mechanism has ability of using available technology at present to breakthrough engineering barriers preventing the process economically industrialized, while allowing new scientific and technological progress of any unit in the process to be added.
