(635d) Biomass Gasification for Hydrogen Production

Authors

Bain, R. L. - Presenter, National Renewable Energy Laboratory

Analysis of hydrogen production using indirect gasification for syngas production followed by gas cleanup, shift reaction, and hydrogen separation has the potential to meet DOE plant gate cost targets of $1.60/gallon gasoline equivalent in 2012 and $1.10/gallon gasoline equivalent in 2017. These analyses are base on pilot gasification data developed in the 1980's.

In this presentation the impact of new correlations based on recent pilot scale gasification testing will be discussed, including the influence of gasification temperature, steam to biomass ratio, and gasifier residence time. The presentation will include a discussion of updated ASPEN simulation and economic analyses comparing the original model and the update model. The presentation will also compare differences in technology assumptions and costs for hydrogen from coal and biomass.
