This presentation addresses the interface between process and product design education. Three classes of chemical products are considered: (1) basic chemicals, (2) industrial chemicals, and (3) configured consumer chemical products. Beginning with an innovation map, to relate new technologies to consumer needs, the stages of product design are considered with emphasis on the Stage-Gate Product Development Process. Emphasis is placed upon the first two stages, the concept and feasibility stages ? with reference to several case studies.
