The decomposition of 1,3 dinitrobenzene as a surrogate for chemical explosives in the presence of titanium dioxide and zinc oxide dispersions under simulated solar light has been investigated. Gas chromatographic analysis for the remaining 1,3 dinitrobenzene was used to monitor reaction progress. A wide range of experimental parameters were varied to determine conditions that would provide practical conditions for spill remediation. Variables studied include solution additives, suspended solids, dissolved oxygen and mixing. Significant increases in the 1,3 dinitrobenzene degradation rate were obtained through the impact of solution additives. Reaction rate expressions were developed to fit the experimental results.
