(665d) Amylopectin-Clay-Microfibrillar Cellulose Composite Films

This work presents properties of amylopectin films containing microfibrillar cellulose (MFC) and/or montmorillonite clay. The purpose of adding MFC is to reduce the need for a plasticiser and the clay enhances the gas and water vapor barrier properties. The films are characterised by e.g. transmission electron and optical microscopy and the tensile properties are evaluated. Also the use of a coupling agent to enhance the bonding between the clay and the amylopectin is evaluated. Preliminary results indicate that the distribution of MFC is even in the matrix and that the clay is either exfoliated or intercalated. It is also observed that the strength and stiffness are significantly enhanced using 4-10 wt.% clay.
