A novel approach has been proposed for stabilization of potassium in combustion of carbon particles (particle size of ca. 13 nm) with reference to carbonaceous matters emitted from diesel engine vehicles. Sodalite, an aluminosilicate zeolite, is employed as a support for holding catalytically active potassium carbonate species. This approach resulted in a high catalytic activity and the activity is further enhanced after hydrothermal treatment at 800 °C. Such kinds of aluminosilicate holds potassium ions strongly and possesses high thermal stability and the stability against high alkaline conditions induced by hydrated potassium ions under practical driving conditions resulting in a regulation of air contaminants caused by the particulate matter of carbon.
