(548b) Hydrogen Production from Jet Fuel

Hydrogen production of high sulfur jet fuels was studied for fuel cell applications. Activities of several rhodium, bimetallic catalysts on various oxide supports are compared in this presentation. The Rh-based catalyst showed the ability to reform JP-8 with > 800 ppmS. The jet fuel samples were analyzed for total sulfur content, and individual organic sulfur compounds were identified. The total sulfur content of the fuels ranged from 350 to 860 ppm S depending on the fuel batches. The majority of the sulfur compounds are 2,3-dimethylbenzothiophene and 2,3,7-trimethylbenzothiophene. It was found that dehydrogenation was enhanced as the Rh catalyst deactivated with time.
