Our final goal is to develop the biomass-orientated regional material and energy circulations, to nurture the growth of the sustainable society. In order to demonstrate the regional circulation, we are going to draw up a plan of ?Biomass Town? to meet the situation in the South-East Asia. The basic concept of Biomass Town is to utilize the biomass resources obtained in the region efficiently and economically, minimizing the waste energy and materials. It is important to understand and respect the individuality of the region for successful energy and material circulations. As one of the promising region for Biomass Town we focused on the Mekong Delta area, Vietnam. In this presentation, the following discussions are involved: 1) concept and system design for the biomass refinery based on the rice cropping, 2) development of ethanol production process from rice straw/husk, and 3) total design of Biomass Town in Mekong area, based on the analyses of the material and energy flow in the region.
