(238b) Tennessee Technological University Math and Science Partnership

The State of Tennessee and the US Department of Education is currently investing in an initiative called Math and Science Partnership (MSP) to help train middle and high school math and science teachers to make linkages between their subject and the engineering disciplines. As part of this effort, a series of activities focusing on core chemical engineering concepts have been developed. One of the unique aspects of this initiative is activities that focus on helping teachers to meet 7th through 12th grade math and science standards through engineering related activities. These activities utilize familiar scenarios that teachers and students can relate to, yet end up tied to science, mathematics with linkages to engineering. Some of the activities include, ?A Good Hot Shower,? wherein teachers learn about energy conservation and fluid flow, ?There's Nothing Like a Barbeque,? which focuses on the effect of size (scale) on heat transfer and ?Engineering the Modern Vehicle,? a simple mathematical exercise that illustrates how viscous drag impacts vehicle mileage.
