The next generation of 1-D nanosensors based on the field effect transistor (FET) principle will require novel approaches to detection specificity that go beyond affinity recognition. One such approach is coating nanowires with biomimetic structures such as lipid membranes. We will present the electrical characterization studies of such lipid membrane supported on silicon nanowires (SiNW). The large radial curvature of SiNW could induce changes in the membrane structure and the resulting ion permeability. We also explore the influence of bilayer composition and other factors on the SiNW FET electrical behavior.
