Safety in Design and Operation - Pilot Plants and Unit Operation Labs: I
Monday, October 31, 2005 - 8:00am to 8:25am
Abstract
Pilot plants and laboratory units in petrochemical service handle numerous flammable materials at elevated temperatures and pressures. Many factors, including the exploratory nature of research, limited understanding of the chemistry, small size of the equipment and frequent need for unit modifications make it challenging to prevent fires and explosions while still allowing research to continue. An industrial research laboratory faces numerous challenges not found in a educational laboratory even when the work appears similar. This requires new approaches to ensuring a safe operation at all times.
This presentation will discuss ExxonMobil's experience with a layered approach to this safety issue based on application of the following general principles:
?h Preconstruction safety reviews ?h Research specific standards ?h Leak tight design ?h Proper construction ?h Area electrical classification ?h Ventilation ?h Proper maintenance ?h Control of change procedure
This presentation will discuss how each of these items fits into the overall system designed to reduce risk and maximize research productivity. It will highlight where ExxonMobil has had the greatest success in achieving safety and discuss lessons we have learned over time.
