Competition for US oil gets intense as domestic demand recovers

Surging domestic oil demand may reduce the availability of US crude for export, pitting Asian refiners against US plants that are boosting their crude intakes as the spring maintenance season wraps up, according to industry consultant Energy Aspects. Increased demand from US refineries may also interfere with China's plans to import more American crude, said Energy Aspects analyst Virendra Chauhan.

Northern Oil acquires assets in N.D.'s Williston Basin

Northern Oil & Gas has purchased oil-producing assets from Salt Creek Oil & Gas in a cash-and-stock deal worth $63.6 million. The asset package in North Dakota's Williston Basin includes 1,380 barrels of oil equivalent per day and 1,319 net acres held by production.

BP, Chevron among bidders for BHP's US shale assets

Chevron, BP and Royal Dutch Shell are among the early bidders submitting offers worth between $7 billion and $9 billion for BHP Billiton's entire US shale unit, according to sources. BHP expects proceeds of at least $10 billion if its sells the entire shale portfolio to a single party and as much as $13 billion if it sells the assets in several individual packages.

Senator urges implementation of new crude-by-rail safety standards

Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., is asking federal regulators to move swiftly to implement new volatility standards for oil trains to ensure safety as more Bakken crude is shipped by rail.
