Don't miss out on the latest business and technology news for chemical engineers, featuring select items in relation to Fuels & Petrochemicals.

Chemical competitiveness will depend on 3 factors

The US chemical industry should adopt fuels-to-chemicals technologies, digital technologies and embrace sustainability, according to this Deloitte analysis. "Digital can act not only as an enabler for attracting a more agile workforce, but also cause chemicals enterprises to hire, develop, and retain highly skilled talent," the authors write.

OPEC, allies reach deal to curb output

OPEC and its allies made an agreement Friday in Vienna to slash oil production by 1.2 million barrels per day, with 800,000 of those coming from OPEC. Crude prices gained up to 5.4% in London after news of the deal emerged.

Appalachia will strengthen US' role in global chemicals, says Perry

Ample low-cost shale gas in the Appalachian region is a huge opportunity for the US that will help the country compete in the global chemical sector, says Energy Secretary Rick Perry, citing a new Energy Department report. "We have done good work in developing the abundance of the Permian Basin and the Gulf of Mexico -- and there's still much more we can do -- but we also have a special opportunity in the Appalachian region," he says.

Biofuel could help Maersk comply with net zero CO2 target

Maersk sees the use of carbon-neutral fuels such as biofuels as the only possible way to achieve net zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050. "The next five to 10 years are going to be crucial. We will invest significant resources for innovation and fleet technology to improve the technical and financial viability of decarbonized solutions," says Maersk's Soren Toft.

EPA to require more advanced biofuel blending in 2019

The Environmental Protection Agency is reportedly planning to boost the federal mandate for advanced biofuels by 15% to 4.92 billion gallons in 2019 while leaving blending requirements for conventional biofuels unchanged at 15 billion gallons. The EPA has also decided against reallocating volumes waived through small refinery exemptions.

Trump proposal nixes clean energy rules

President Donald Trump is working to change two environmental policies that will boost oil and coal industries by opening a wildlife habitat to drilling and mining and getting rid of certain rules involving the construction of coal-fired power plants. Trump's goal is to stimulate the coal industry and raise domestic energy production.

Oil majors on quest to bridge gender gap

Oil companies such as Chevron are working to address the gender equality problem by investing in programs focused on advancing women in science, technology, engineering and math careers, but the industry is decades away from a major breakthrough in this regard. Women make up 22% of the global oil and natural gas workforce, the second smallest percentage of women in an industry after construction, according to the Boston Consulting Group, and that's partly because women aren't encouraged to take up STEM careers as often as men are, says Stacey Olson, a Chevron vice president.
