3.  CALL FOR NOMINATIONS: 2017 ASEE SUMMER SCHOOL

The Call for Participant Nominations is now open for the 2017 ASEE Summer School for Chemical Engineering Faculty at NC State University, July 29-August 3, 2017. The summer school is designed to provide guidance and resources to help new faculty excel as teachers and as scholars.  It is intended for early- career Chemical Engineering educators in appointments of all types; tenure-track or non-tenure-track.

The planning committee at this time welcomes nominations from program chairs, heads, and directors for their faculty members to participate in the summer school.  The nomination process is designed to ensure department support for the investment of time in the event and to secure a commitment to working with the faculty member to cover transportation costs. Faculty interested in participating should first talk to their department chair about the nomination process.

The first nominee by a program will be given complementary registration, including meals and on-campus dormitory lodging. Additional nominees from a program may be charged a registration fee of no more than $500, depending on external support.

Nominations by chairs, heads, and directors may be made from the participation link available on the Summer School website, http://www.chesummerschool.org. The deadline for nomination is January 31.

After being nominated, potential participants will be sent a “save the date” message with more detail on the process. The formal registration process will commence early in 2017.

Request for exceptions to the nomination process or other questions may be sent to David Silverstein (David.Silverstein@uky.edu, 270-534-3132).

4.  CALL FOR PARTICIPATION: LIVE AICHE WEBINAR WITH LISA BULLARD

Dr. Lisa Bullard will be presenting a live AIChE webinar “A Survival Guide to Chemical Engineering and a Guided Tour of Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes” on January 11, 2017, 2:00-3:00pm EST. This webinar is mainly intended for student members of AIChE, but faculty are welcome to participate and may pick up some good tips to share with their own students. Faculty may also wish to encourage students who have not yet taken Material and Energy Balances to join the webinar. Student announcement below:

A Survival Guide to Chemical Engineering and a Guided Tour of Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes: Taking Material and Energy Balances, the first course in your major, is exciting, but also scary. Some students quickly get the lay of the land and achieve success. Others either give up or barely limp through. The course is not easy, but you can survive. Find out how in this webinar, led by the professor who teaches the course and co-authored the textbook Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes.

Join Dr. Lisa Bullard as she shares valuable lessons learned from former students and walks you through the popular course textbook, Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes. This live webinar takes place on Wednesday, January 11, 2017, from 2:00-3:00pm ET.  In 60 minutes, Dr. Bullard will draw from her many years teaching the first course in Chemical Engineering as she offers her valuable advice and study tips. She’ll share the observations of current and former undergraduate students and TAs who completed the course along with their valuable perspective on potential pitfalls to watch out for.  This webinar includes a guided tour of the textbook Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes. You’ll learn how the various parts of a typical material and energy balance course fit together and flow. In addition, gain tips for success related to specific topics in the course.

Take a look at your agenda:

- Why the course is a big shock for some students
- Lessons learned from students who’ve successfully completed the course
- How this course is different from any other
- Tips for adapting your study habits to achieve success

Register at http://www.aiche.org/academy/webinars/survival-guide-chemical-engineering-and-guided-tour-elementary-principles-chemical-processes for this live webinar presented by the course instructor and textbook co-author to learn how to survive the first course in your ChemE major.
