Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from human activities, land-use changes, and transportation are the main cause of the global climate change. Per capita Carbon Dioxide (CO2) emission in the U.S. is exceeding acceptable levels for the civilized world and is jeopardizing the well-being of the future generations. This research paper postulates greenhouse gas emissions as the major environmental problem of 21st century which must be reduced and explores the sources of CO2 emissions in relation to household activities that directly impact environmental sustainability. Household Carbon Dioxide footprints of a 2012 household survey and travel Carbon Dioxide emissions of Maryland’s 2007 Household Travel Survey (HTS) data are measured and analyzed to evaluate the impacts of households’ behavior and characteristics on energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. Various statistical and descriptive analysis is presented to outline the specific characteristics associated with the amount of emissions. In conclusion a list of recommendations will be offered on crucial actions required to pave the path towards a sustainable future.
