The U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI) DNA Synthesis Science platform has grown nearly four-fold (from 1.33 Mbp FY13 to 5.62 Mbp FY20 delivered per year). Consequently, there is increasing demand for informatics that supports DNA design and construction for increased scale and new features/tools. These informatics capabilities include SynTrack, enabling JGI scientists to submit their DNA designs for the constructions and monitor the designs’ progress through the DNA assembly pipeline.

We have recently enhanced SynTrack to visualize the many years of tracked data maintained within the tool by developing a new dashboard of performance indicator charts and graphs. This dashboard functionality is built on a scalable data warehouse system and lightweight Flask server-side containers combined with Angular visualization components. The dashboard captures data from the data warehouse, generates a set of charts for analysis (e.g., DNA synthesis in bps per quarter, construction time as a function of DNA size, and construction success rates as a function of the DNA assembly method). We envision that these data visualizations and their analyses will improve DNA construction efficiency, reduce the turnaround time, and provide better process visibility. Planned future developments will allow users to view the progress of their individual project/DNA assemblies.
