Climate Change and Engineering Sustainability

Chair(s)

Smith, R., US Environmental Protection Agency

Co-chair(s)

Liguori, S., Clarkson University

This session encourages contributions that emphasize perspectives which chemical engineers bring to the current hot topic of Climate Change and Engineering Sustainability. Solutions for reducing greenhouse gases while maintaining sustainability are of the highest interest. Chemical engineers actively seek to minimize the environmental impact of human endeavors and industrial activities. Through sustainable development, they try to meet present world needs without compromising the capability of future generations to meet their needs. All submissions address climate change. Research with the following or similar objectives is included in this session: • Improve chemical processes that convert raw materials into finished products, • Reduce fuel consumption through better energy efficiency and product yield, • Maximize reuse of valuable by-products, • Decrease in the use of scarce natural resources and fossil fuels, • Eliminate the release of harmful pollutants into the environment, • Decarbonize electricity production; and enhance carbon capture and storage (CCS), • Develop and design negative emission technologies (NETs).
