This talk will focus on a number of particular types of membrane separation techniques and technologies relevant for bioprocessing and food processing applications. Specifically, I will focus on the following techniques/technologies: membrane-based nondispersive solvent extraction of bioproducts from their dilute solutions; ultrafiltration separation of mixtures of proteins having molecular weight ratios between as low as 1.03 to 3+; pervaporation separation for dilute biofuel/biochemical systems; continuous hollow fiber membrane-based crystallizations of active pharmaceutical ingredients; organic solvent reverse osmosis. I will illustrate examples of separations by each of these membrane processes where significant progress has been achieved.
