(535a) Acetylene Powered Thermal Power Plant Boiler

Coal is depleting at an alarming level due to an increase in demand and increasing load on the generation sector. The present study focuses on the incorporation of alternative fuels along with existing components without making major modifications. Acetylene is a type of alternative and synthetic fuel that is sustainable, energy-conserving, engine efficiency, and needs minor modifications from current boilers. It is easy to produce from simple and rapid hydrolysis reactions of calcium carbide and water at a low cost. As calcium carbide is produced from lime and coke, whose availability is abundant, acetylene gas has the potential of becoming the most prominent source as an alternative fuel for the engine. As Acetylene is a highly combustible gas with a calorific value of 48225 kJ/kg, it can be used in the boiler as an alternative fuel to attain super-critical temperature. At this critical point, the pressure and temperature attained to be 22.1 Mpa and 374oC, respectively.
